Today I finished reading “An Abundance of Katherines“, it’s a book highly recommended by my special friend across the pond (of Doom!). At first I thought it was going to be a chick flick book;boy meets girl (probably called Katherine), girl falls in love with boy, and i dunno, some interesting event happened, probably a third person, and then they break up, but in the end they get back together and BAM, fornication! THE END! But yeah… it really wasn’t haha. The book had loads of winning themes that I’m interested in which makes it a win; a child prodigy, anagrams, foreign languages, maths (mmm indexed and xkcd), witty humour and a shed load of cheeky footnotes! Here’s what the back of the book says (speed typed by moi):

19 Katherines and counting…

When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton’s type is girls named Katherine. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact.

One the road trip miles from home, this anagram-happy, washed-up child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a bloodthirsty feral hog on his trail, and an over-weight, Judge Judy-loving best friend riding shotgun- but no Katherines. Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationships, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and may finally win him the girl.

Ok, so the description does sound a bit cheesy but once you get into it, you’ll realise it’s not really about the ever so clichéd theme love. It’s about crazy road trips, anagrams, jokes about emo’s, inside jokes, wit, hilarious graphs and cheeky maths (because lets face it, we all love MATHS!). The author is a huge fan of Catcher in the Rye (you’ll notice a lot of subtle references to the book) and this book is pretty similar to it (read Catcher in the Rye if you haven’t already) as it’s based upon a pretty self centered character going on a bitch ass trip to discover stuff (and at the same time sweating like a *******).

“amour aime aimer amour!”

So yeah, the photo I took in this post was dedicated to it, it’s filled with geekiness, cryptology and inside jokes that you’ll begin to understand once you read it (and you want to get inside my mind dont you? huh huh? ). So yeah, read it, it certainly made me chuckle during my commutes to work. Now I’ll be stuck on what to read next *strokes metaphorical beard*.

So yeah, cozy blabbers* recomends you to an Abundance of Katherines
mmm anagrams

I believe I first started reading Harry Potter around the start of August, I only received the book from Alice through the post and I started reading it on the coach to Canterbury where I was having that housewarming party at Stu’s place. At first I only wanted to read it since Alice expressed how much she loved the books and I thought it would be nice to be a part of that. After that I was in a proper readathon.

It was around the time when I finished reading Prisoner of Azkaban that I really got into a hardcore reading mood and was hooked to the books. I believe I finished around the 3rd or 4th of September with pretty much bloodshot eyes but a rather satisfied self that managed to read the entire series front and back within a month (granted I was going out to parties, visiting Alice, going to Leeds festival and other bits and bobs which delayed finishing it any earlier). I really enjoyed reading it. There are times where you simply couldn’t put them down! The last few days in particular were the best having been able to read the last two books in 1.5 days (including sleeping, eating and all sorts of breaks). It got to a point where I was having “internet breaks”! Usually it’s the other way around haha.

I believe the best part of reading the books is when you get right at the end, J K Rowling would always pack the end with explanations of answers to loads of questions you find within the book and previous books. I really liked her style of writing and more importantly the world she created within Harry Potter and all.

I was particularly happy that I was able to read the books 95% spoiler free. The beauty of not getting what people were saying when I wasn’t reading the book as well as ensuring I dont go to places that would reveal spoilers and all meant that I got all the surprises and gasps you could possibly get with Harry Potter, though I must say Deathly Hallows was pretty much ruined after two incidents with Kazzie and Stephie casually telling people around me what happened. It was a particularly numbed out book when certain members died haha.

And now, like the other Harry Potter fans, I’m stuck aimlessly with no more storyline to read, I can’t possibly imagine how others feel since they’ve been into the book for years and were waiting for the ending for an ungodly amount of years to have their answers revealed and all. But I suppose it ended so nicely that it was ok to just leave it now and concentrate on slating how badly the films are.

So yeah, was quite fun reading the entire series front to back. Glad I didn’t do what I initially wanted to do and that was to read the entire series backwards haha. Would have ruined so much and all!
My manics tickets arrived today too, looking much forward to do that Can imagine lots of fans sleeping outside the Apollo just so they can see them at the front. Madness.
Some other news include my interview day at IBM, it will be on the 15th March, have to skip uni to do that, not only that, I’ll have to travel there the day before in order that I can arrive at the place at 9am. Hopefully they will locate their work placement at London so life would be alot easier, and without the thoguht of moving in with a bunch of weird people and sharing bills with them

When he hears her favourite Beatles song, Toru Watanabe recalls his first love Naoko, the girlfriend of his best friend Kizuki. Immediately he is transported back almost twenty years to his student days in Tokyo, adrift in a world of uneasy friendships, casual sex, passion, loss and desire – to a time when an impetuous young woman called Midori marches into his life and he has to choose between the future and the past.
