She Keeps Bees at Brixton Windmill

She Keeps Bees live at Brixton Windmill part 2, with several references to part 1 last week, She Keeps Bees play another lovely set to the lovely lundun folks. She joked around about how people were here to listen to some folk music and was super bubbly and friendly with the audience.

Jessica sang Ribbon which made Anika swoon. She also told me she saw my photos so ACE :D

I took this with flash, if you look at the Anna Log photo you can see some (well i tried to angle it so there werent many) shadows lurking around which i found really offputting. Flash seemed to be the cure of it and since the light itself was plain, there’s no harm in using it. Luckily I think Windmill is one of those venues where you can use flash and get some good results, I kept the compensation low and the iso high so I wasn’t souly dependant on it, I think the main goal was to eliminate the damn shadows the other lights were making.

Redwings (237/365)

And this is where we wake in the ditch
This is where our bodies sing no more

White will have to be colour number 3, not exactly sure where I’m going with this, I told people I was going to shoot this place, people thought I was weird :( Taking this photo and trying not to get trampled was my main priority.

Funny how things always appear wonky in my eyes

Through the Windowpane (236/365)

Oh come in through my windowpane
Won’t you come in through my windowpane

They say eyes are the windows to the soul, does that mean windows are the eyes of a building soul, assuming buildings have souls*

Blue is probably my second favourite colour. It’s always nice when mixed with a vivid yellow :)

To flash or not to flash?

Golden Animals

You’re not going to catch me doing this much mind, but since I bought the 580exii flash gun I’ve been dying to try and use it properly at a gig, see if it’s actually feasible to use flash or is it best to just stick to no flash and boost the iso up to compensate the low light, it was obviously nice to try it on a venue like the Windmill since their lights are shall we say, just a white light shining up them and producing harsh shadows that was pretty much like an nonstop ray of flash at them. Least with the flash I was shooting upwards so it would rebound the ceiling and produce a softish light over them and eliminating some of the shadow. But yeah, dunno if it worked? I’m quite loving the flash gun because for a venue like Windmill it does produce some gritty details to the venue which you hardly see when I’m shooting without flash.

But yeah, I’m experimenting, won’t be relying on flash about 95% of the time. Just one venues where I think would appreciate the light (which are very lacking I might add).

So yeah, opinions please, I’m new to the whole flash malark and have been pretty stubborn in thinking it’s an evil thing. But as I continue shooting I realise I’d like some shots where the iso is fairly low and I’m not stuck with annoying shades of red or blue.

She Keeps Bees at Brixton Windmill

After much procrastinating to see She Keeps Bees I managed to catch them play at Brixton Windmill along with Anika. We had a lovely nando’s meal and arrived fairly early. Anika got quite excited when band members Jessica and Andy appeared, she eventually introduced me to them and we all sat together listening to the first act.

Afterwards it was them up, and boy they were good. I can see why Anika has seen them 8 times already, she exert this raw energy quite similar to Wildbirds and Peacedrums even though their genres in music are quite different. I loved Jessica’s little banter during songs, she’s awfully modest and the band themselves are uuber friend onstage and in person.

I considered experimenting with the flash for this venue seeing as the lights for this venue was nice white light and was producing shadows anyway so artificial light would pretty much be the same, though Anika’s head shaking to the idea meant I tried it on Golden Animals who played next.

Thorntons do ice cream :O

Thorntons do ice cream :O

It feels weird whenever I leave work and just come back home, but it’s definitely nice to have some time sitting around and doing those tasks I’ve made weeks ago or blogging posts that happened months ago (oh dear).

Anyway, when I haven’t thought of an idea for 365 I just improvise and buy something to shoot, today I managed to grab myself a lovely ice cream, but upon browsing the fine selection of iced cream at my local (but not so humble since it was taken over by some folks who look mean and dont bother putting prices on their items) newsagent, I managed to spot a THORNTONS white delight ice cream! Since when did they do ice cream :O Instantly that was my ice cream of choice, I purchased the ice cream and dashed straight into the bus which conveniently stopped at the spot which meant I was the first person into the bus. The entire journey was spent holding the ice cream in the air (because you know, i just didn’t care) hoping it didn’t melt before I got back, hence the tweet…

"Hoping my photo subject for today won’t melt before I get home". It felt like a fun journey back, constantly having my arm held up high and not being able to eat. The journey was short but stuffy, once home I took my camera (didn’t bring it today hence why i didn’t open the ice cream) and ran back outside to take a photograph of it.

Anyway, after unwrapping the ice cream i realised that it was pretty much like a white magnum but with Thornton tasting chocolate, it was nice and sweet. I want another one now.

I shot this using the 28mm and waiting for a bus to appear so I could use it’s rear lights for some nice bokeh action, I managed to catch a lovely red bokeh on top of the ice cream which looked pretty ace. I swiftly ate the ice cream and went back home to tell the tale.

Laura Marling at Royal Festival Hall

Laura Marling at Royal Festival Hall

Laura Marling live at Royal Festival Hall. Might actually want to stress that it was Laura Marling and Friends live at Royal Festival Hall. This show not only had a steller set by Laura (finally this was the first time I’ve heard her songs with full band and everything), you also got a showcase of friends who Laura met throughout her career who have kindly performed at the event.

It was a nice event giving audience a feel of bands and musicians interacting, tributing and playing together as a community / collective (heck we even had Sons of Noel and Adrian, part of the Willkommen collective playing).

Most of the bands I’ve seen before, but obviously none of them at Royal Festival Hall, the venue, being a pretty posh one for classical symphonies and performances, was great at projecting music the way it should be heard. Alessi and Peggy Sue were two examples who I felt sounded ten times better than previous performances, just because of the venue upgrade (consider it as +STR in dungeons and dragons or something).

Laura was really shy throughout the gig, you could tell that she was nervous doing speeches but she nonetheless powered through them as well as her actual performance. It all ended in traditional style with all the artists coming up on stage and singing / playing Crawled Out of the Sea.

I missed out on seeing Emmy at Pure Groove but granted I wouldn’t get photopit access if I went to Emmy and I’d be potentially missing Andrew Bird or Alessi, i decided to give Emmy a miss (sorry Emmy :( ) and stay for the entire Laura Marling show. Gig clashes sucketh :(
