Travelling abroad to see Muse

Far away.... to see museLately I’ve been pondering, Muse have seriously become one of those bands where some fans just can’t get enough of the band and have to see them more than once during each tour. Of course, Muse are reknown for making stunning performances on stage and have won enough awards to pretty much be one of the best live acts in the Uk. But what makes a person take a nice plane to another new destination to see the band?

Now, to get some perspective on how dedicate some people are, I know people who’ve been to about 22 gigs for ONE TOUR. Not their entire gig list, just for one tour. I’ve seen the elderly females travel from the other side of the pond to catch an extra glimpse of the band and I’ve seen the ridiculous folks who came all the way from Japan to see them (wait a sec, that applies for all bands (and I’m still confused as to how the Japanese go on holiday so much, I hear that they seldomly use their holidays)). Feel free to beat those figures, I’m pretty sure there’s someone mad enough.

So yeah, this is more of an ask the readers on why they do it. Two of the staff on the Muse board crew are going to see Muse at Dublin so I wanted to see what your opinion is on gigging abroad, and whether it’s worth the effort of going.

I can understand people who’s hometown is hardly recognise which forces them to go other destinations but some people like me live in the city which makes it incredibly easy to catch the band a shed load of times. Anyway, get commenting.

Don’t forget to take note on the witty photo caption haha ;)

I know I would! I’m torn between going to see them in Dublin or waiting until they tour the UK in 2009. If only the Dublin gig was on the weekend.

Well … I live in a little, godforsaken corner of Europe so they didn’t even come to my country. The only chance of ever getting to one of their gigs is to travel abroad. That’s my excuse.
But, on the other hand … If I lived in England, I’d probably go to several gigs in, close to or a-little-less-close-to my hometown :P If only I lived where you live (:

Im so glad i found this place. i absolutley love muse. i guess you could say i am an older fan, at 41. i too would travel a lot to see then if i had teh means, I was having two spinal suregires at teh same time they toured the U.S.. I live in Tennessee, so not very likley that they would ever come here at all.
I certainly hope so. as my limited mobility and income would have to be stretched to its absolute most to even be able to see then in atlanta Ga.area. Which is bye far the closest place i can see them possibly coming to.
I would give my right arm to see them in concert! It is my dying wish to see them. NOt that i am planning on dying soon but hey, you never really know lol!
Besides, it would be My dying wish if i needed one quickly! I so love there music and I hear often how awome they are live.Which was obvious to me on the live 8 concert. I only wish i could be the one to say that myself. that yes, they are truly wonderfull live! I will continue to work towards that goal of seeing them live!as much as possible.
However, speaking of the ” older female fans” of Muse. It sure would be nice if they put out teacups or as we call them here coffee cups with there logos /pics on it.
as my age doesnt really have the space for posters.Unless of course i borrow my teens wall space! lol.
and the coffee cup is somthing a lot of bands have added for the more ” mature ” music fans. I prefer that to teh older women fans! lmao..
Thanks for the site, the updates and the show info.
keep up the good work and hopefully soon enough Ellen degenres will listen to me when i ask her to have Muse on her show., They are truly the best! The absolute Best not only in U.k but everywhere. I do belive. That is my humble opion for what it is worth, and hey! I m old so i should know !;)
    Kind regards,
Dawn ( the older mature fan) ;)

Quite a tough question…I’ve just saw them live for the 16th time, and three more to come in august. And honestly…I’ve been travelling quite a lot in europe, and i know nothing better than that. First becauses gigs are awesome-no matter what frustrated people says-but because we are having great time, meeting new people, learning new ways of living, in a cultural level it’s pretty amazing.
But Muse has a fantastic power on me. They’re pretty much my strengh to keep fighting shit presents of life like bad health. I need this to keep going on, and not to give up just everything. Muse is powerful. Amazingly powerful. That’s my reason, for what it’s worth.

  • reef says:

I live in Australia so it can be hard to see the bands you love. If i had the money, I’d got to all the Aust tour dates because bands only come here every few years.

    love the caption, btw!

I live in the US and am planning on coming across the pond by myself to see Muse play in Dublin or the V Festival or both. Any input on what shows I should go to would be great! Thanks!

  • Gab S says:

Come from Southampton in the UK and going to see Muse in Dublin. Was also going to go to the Lisbon gig this year or Verona last year.

  • MIRANDA says:

Well go anywhere you can and don’t leave it till next year. I’m 44 and would go wherever my pocket would allow. I saw Bob Marley when I was 16 and he only did five more gigs. Never put it off! See you in Dublin X

  • Kells says:

Muse are SO worth jetting off everywhere for! I’ve only recently got that crazy and regret not going more on the last tour. I’m only on my 5th, with Dublin and V to come. Furthest I’ve gone is Oslo, Norway which was fab. Got right to the barrier and had Sunburn played right infront of me, I nearly died! Only went there because I cried after Wembley, as the tour was over in UK, I thought I’d not get to see them again until the next album tour, 2008 looked grim with no prospect of Muse! So when Oslo was announced I just had to go! (closest to uk!)
2008 turned out to be better than I expected tho as my mum, bro and I got to the barrier again at Albert Hall! :) Now that was Awesome!
Roll on August two gigs in one week, Muse Heaven! Wish I could afford the flight to South America!

Muse are like a drug. The pre-gig anticipation is immense. The feeling you get when they are performing blows you away and the come down afterwards, knowing you’re not going to feel like that again for possibly months is horrendous! Crazy? Possibly. Bothered? Not at all!
And for older fans, the orangy/red live poster looks great in a frame as the center piece for a living room with a red/ black theme! Loved dressing my mew flat with Muse as inspiration! :)

  • Kells says:

    Oh, Heather…
Come to Dublin. Ireland rocks and festivals, although are great and you see loads of other bands, just seeing Muse on their own is much better. Or do both, why not after the expense and time of the flight over!

  • well my band are going doing a tour in italy next year and weve organised all of that!

its worth going to see muse anywhere in the world. Ide go even if they did a space gig!

  • mistysakura says:

I haven’t travelled to see Muse… but if I were to do so, I’d plan a holiday around it. I’d go somewhere I’ve always wanted to go, and Muse would be a special treat. That way, I’m not really forking out flights and accommodation just to see Muse (although they’re awesome and all).

  • Paul Sproge says:

Hey Heather, where are you flying out from?

My friend and I are flying out from JFK to see Muse in Dublin as well. Lemme know if you’re from around the New York area!

As for this post: this will be the first time I am traveling abroad to see a Muse concert. The only reason being that the accomodations are free.

My friends an I met 2 nice Irish guys from Dublin last year at Muse’s Madison Square Garden concert. They sat right behind us and we sort of hung out together for the rest of the show. They explained to us how they were staying in NY on “holiday” for a week. We exchanged numbers and emails after the show and invited them to party with us sometime during the week. They agreed and a couple days later we all got shitfaced together.

So now that Muse is playing in Dublin, I guess you could say they are returning the hospitality?

    Either way, there’s my excuse.

    I can’t fuckin’ wait!!!!!

  • Anya says:

My sister and I live in NZ. We’re going to Dublin and V. 16,000 miles and an insane amount of cash. SO worth it. There is nowhere we wouldn’t travel if it was required to see Muse again.

  • Sam says:

when muse came to New Zealand in November last year, I went to the only 2 concerts they had here…first in Auckland and then flew down to Christchurch..

    Well worth it!!

  • Heather says:

OK - I got my tickets last night. I’m going to Dublin! I’m coming from Los Angeles - traveling by myself. I think this is the first time I’ve ever been to a concert alone. Muse is well worth it. Kells and Paul, I hope to meet you both!

  • Iida says:

I have enough money, but unfortunately my school starts on the same day as the Dublin gig. They came once to my little town in Finland. But I didn’t know them yet:( It’s a shame I won’t see them this year, if they won’t come to Scandinavia. I wish you guys will have a good time in Dublin.

  • Jo says:

I missed the long waited Finland gig after it was sold out too fast but I got another chance this year to go see Muse live, which will be at the V Festival. This is my first time ever going to a foreign festival to see my favourite group. Yea I’m a bit scared to go to a different country but it will be worth it. I’ve been waiting for this for years. Missed too many Muse gigs.

  • Collin says:

Gotta see them in Dublin , cant wait until next year cos really their new album will take up alot of their time I would imagine…sell the car/kids/house, go see’em..!!

  • yaqfly says:

I’ll be traveling from puerto rico to Dublin to see Muse live @ Marley Park. In case you’re wondering this is the distance Distance:

3969.7 miles or 6388.6 kilometers or 3449.6 nautical miles

  • érola says:

I’ve seen them 10 times already, Dublin will be my 11th =) luckily we get to see them often enough here in Italy (what with Matt living here and all :D ).. what can I say, I just love traveling and whenever I can pair it up with a Muse gig, well.. that’s just perfect! :D
I haven’t been THAT far from home (UK, France, Sweden and Ireland are hardly a long shot from here) but I would if I had the money.. Muse are always worth it =)

  • L.A.P. says:

“Elderly females from the other side of the pond”, eh? *wink*
Is 40 elderly, ’cause I don’t know…. Anyway, I’m glad Muse is around at this time in my life instead of when I was, say, 18 or so, because at that time I wouldn’t have been able to afford to fly around to see them!

Coming to V this summer will be the THIRD time I’ve flown from California to England to see Muse (Wembley and RAH were the other two), not to mention the five other times I’ve boarded a plane within the U.S. to see Muse, and all the long-distance driving I’ve done in order to see Muse.
In fact, the very first time I saw Muse, I boarded a plane in order to do so. I felt it was THAT important!
I guess it goes with the territory when you are fully inspired by a band. I find their music to be extremely compelling and empowering, as well as it is very beautiful and exhilarating. Sonic therapy of the highest order!

I have met and made friends with some incredible people in all these travels, as well, which has added another special dimension to the whole experience.

13 Muse gigs for me, and counting……

  • Jean Carlo says:

Well, I’ve never been to a Muse concert, but I arranged some flight plans with a friend to go watch them in Guadalajara tomorrow (july 18), and today I read about their signing in a local Music Store at 3:00 p.m., which is stunning cuz my flight arrives to the city at that time, and hopefully I’ll arrive just in time to get an autograph! Woa, too much excitement for one day…

  • Andy says:

I live in Glasgow, and I have only seen Muse once (Wembley, 17/7, best gig ever blah, blah).

I’m going to Marlay Park too.

I have only been into the band long enough that they havent played in Scotland while i would see them.

But theyre the only band I would travel to see. Unless by a freak chance I was already torn between two countries in which to holiday and I discover Muse are playing while I would be there.

    Its just so exciting :D

  • Niall says:

I would definitely go to Dublin and Chelmsford if I had the money. Well if I had the money I’d follow them around the world like SOUSOUS! They do plenty of stuff we never get in the UK, like bringing back old songs (Showbiz and Dead Star) and testing new ones (like Debase and Exo) and that would really be enough to get me to travel to see them.

  • yaqfly says:

well, for the ones that are going to dublin here is my email in case you want to contact me there [email protected], Counting the days. ;-)

  • Jurian says:

I live in Holland, and I managed to win 2 tickets from the Royal Albert Hall lottery. Not only that, I was told I was the only foreign winner of it. I couldn’t get off from work, so I went early saturday morning and ended up in the pub with some mates. Went to the concert, and went back to my mates house who had to grab his bags. Just missed the last train back to the airport, so we slept on a bench till it opened a few hours later.
Awesome time, first time in London ending up sleeping on the sidewalk :D

  • i saw them a few weeks ago.. travelled for more than 30 hours from La Paz,Bolivia my hometown to Santiago, chile where they performed, it was so worth it i definetly do it again.. i’ ve waited too many years to see them live.. they are amazing!

  • James says:

Got back from Dublin this evening - first time seeing Muse abroad. Great experience and in my opinion the best of the 3 shows I’ve seen. We got to and from Dublin airport with little hassle and found a good hostel to stay in overnight. I’d recommend travelling to see the band - I’m definately going to go further afield on the next tour.

  • Danielle says:

I would love to travel around and follow my favourite artists, i would just need lots of money. My first attempt is next month when im going to switzerland to see Brandi carlile. not the best move money wise, but sounds like fun! If i had the money i’d follow P!nk around the country and possible europe. A fellow brandi fan has been to 30 odd gigs and seen her in the US and australia and gone on music cruise holidays….

  • Solange says:

Give me money and time and I’ll follow them around anywhere in the world. I felt all agitated when they played my birth town. Sao Paulo this year, but unfortunatley I couldn’t make to it. It would’ve been brilliant because it seemed to be a small gig compared to the Wembley one.

    • crazybobbles says:

Hehe the issue with me is that people seem to have an unlimited amount of funding for them to tour with a band. Seeing them play at Sao Paulo would have been ace, I’ve been listening to a lot of “Sao Paulo” by Guillemots lately haha (random trivia).

  • John-James says:

I went to see Muse in Dublin in August last year, after just missing out on tickets to the Royal Albert Hall, I live in Liverpool so even though it was only a 10 minute flight, it’s still technically abroad.Im so glad I went to see them in Marlay Park rather than the Albert Hall because even though the Albert Hall seemed to be a great gig for the band and certainly would have been an experince, seeing them in Marlay Park was the first time for me, though ive followed them for ages, and to be in a middle of a field, well actually close to the front which was great, surrounded by loads of other fans who’d travelled, it was amazing, there praised for being amazing live and i got to enjoy the full experience. I think people travel to see muse in there best, I know i’d do it again.
