Leeds Weekend.. Day 1

Ok to set the tone for Leeds weekend, picture a shot looking down at Leeds and slowly moving down, and the title “Leeds Weekend” fading into the screen, and soon after imagine “Day 1″ sort of dissolving out below Leeds Weekend with a slightly sinister sound accompanying it. Get the picture right? Because this is the exact opposite of it haha.

Welcome to back to THE NORTH

The portal was open, other souls were entering the portal and it was nearly about to close, I was trapped between two worlds, what should I do? My mind was a complete blank, I had lost all sense of self and had no idea what to do, the wind was almost tearing my clothes away, my hair stood on end from the ravishing winds, I had to decide before it was too late.

Suddenly the wizard emerged from the other end, the Wizard shouted at me “don’t do it, if you take one more step you’ll become a northerner and will never be able to return down south! Dont risk all you have! Come back!”. It was clear what my paths were, to stay down south and never experience up north ever again, or to take the brave step and become forever a northerner. My heart was racing, blood boiled under my veins, I became ever so sweaty as I took the first step that would change the rest of my life. I was… a northerner again!

Leeds City Centre

Hahah, sorry about, haven’t done some random writing in ages. But yeah, I will be heading back to Leeds on June the 1st and returning on June the third. It has been decided, I have my train tickets and everything, no turning back and all. (Probably why I wrote the above haha). So yeah, I shall be partying it up north with Alice, Inn and Gem. Will be a fun weekend! Me, Alice and Inn always wanted to have a photography day where we’d just hang out and take loads of photos, a bit like a flickr meetup but with friends you knew pretty well. We’ll be dining at a nando’s as well as a sushi restaurant with a chef that will sing boyband pop songs whilst he prepares our sushi. Everything sounds good, a perfect way of celebrating my end of uni!

Megabus LogoThe week after that I’ll be having a proper propane and propane accessories BBQ too. So its definitely looking bright. Its definitely a weird feeling knowing I’ll be back at Leeds, I’ve been there over 104 times (back and fourth every weekend) so yeah it brings back memories. Thank god I’m not taking the megabus though, that would well and truely be the death of me if I had to ride that motherf**ker again haha (pardon my french). I’m sure alot of things have changed since I last went there so it will definitely be interesting revisiting the place and all. I might grace everyone with some DDR’ing and all too hehe.

So yeah, it will be fun indeed.

Muse Meetup 23rd November 2006

Also dubbed the “Nandos Meetup”. Kev assigned himself as team leader for this meetup since I wasnt about on the muse board on Wednesday so people were slightly confused as to what was going on. Kev did ring me up the night before asking when we should hold the meetup and all. Twas fun how he wanted to team lead it and everything haha. theres more where that came from »

Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Released

Ubuntu logoWoohoo! Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft is finally released and ready for downloading!

For those who aren’t aware of what Ubuntu is, it’s a Open Source Linux Distribution. To further break that down into something more understandable, it is a free open source operating system like Windows XP or Mac OSX. Ubuntu is one of the most popular linux distributions out of the lot and pose to become more popular then Max OSx and Windows (check this out).

One of the things I was most looking forward in getting was Beryl and Aiglx. These are eye candy apps which make the desktop system much more pretty and fun to work with haha. Previously, there was something known as XGL which replaced the current Desktop system, this proved to be slightly dangerous due to the fact that things can ever so easily screw up. Aiglx provides a more safer alternative as it’s simply an extension to the desktop system. You can easily fallback to the original system if Aiglx fails. Beryl is simply the thing that controls Aiglx. Or something, read it up ahaha.

So yeah, managed to get Ubuntu installed as well as Beryl and Aiglx so immediately I went straight at customising the desktop so it looks like Mac OSX (since I want to get one haha). The results are amazing

Ubuntu desktop
Thats me running a few apps including Open Office: Writer, Gaim (messaging client), and some other odd stuff.

The eyecandy stuff run very smoothly on my shabby laptop (thought the graphics card would crap out). Which means I can easily use all of this when doing my regular things. Though if i didnt want to have all the eyecandy installed I can simply not run them.

Of course, the above just details the flashier side of Ubuntu’s latest release, there are many other features that have been improved, including:

  • Tomboy, an easy-to-use and efficient note-taking tool
  • F-Spot, a photo management tool that enables tagging, photo editing and automatic uploading to on-line web management sites such as Flickr
  • GNOME 2.16, which in addition to new features such as enhanced power management, makes the GNOME desktop more secure, faster and more stable
  • Upstart, a replacement start-up manager offering a cleaner design, eye-catching effects and a substantially faster boot time
  • The latest Firefox web browser, which offers inline spell check support in web forms, easy recovery of crashed sessions, built-in phishing detectors, enhanced search engine management with built in OpenSearch support, and better support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds
  • Proactive security features, preventing many common security vulnerabilities even before they are discovered
  • Evolution 2.8.0, which brings new features such as vertical message panes

Here’s a video of it all in action after installing Beryl

So yeah, if you’re into the whole open source scene, Ubuntu is definitely worth getting and all.
