Woo! Finished report!

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

FreeeAt a disturbing word count of 38, 836 words, a disturbingly awesome poster presentation waiting to be printed off and a nights and nights of staying up late coding, report writing, and head scratching the report is FINALLLLLLLLLLLLY done! Woo!

Theres still other bits and bobs to finish, like database reports, web technology reports as well as prototype demonstrations but they are all small projects that can be done in a desperate night of struggle (like all the great projects men had set off to do in the last minute), but yeah. This was the hardest project I’ve ever done and I’m so glad to just hand it over to the uni people for it to be marked. Bit of an anti climax to be honest. I was expecting this rush after handing it in but nowt. Ah well.

I better do some relaxing now, my head is all tensed up, ready to explode so I’m definitely calling this a day, a of relaxing, a day of kings shall we say haha. A day where I can toss my shoes in the air and just set myself free (is a more toned down non hippy free love kind of way).

Ooh waiting for an awesome parcel arrive now :) Thank god I handed my project in early otherwise I would have went to a crazy Royal Mail car chase (with my imaginary car). Anyway… WOOO!!!!!

Report writing is soul destroying

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

I’m up to 20,031 words… I’ve done about 58 pages of work. My brain is slowly melting, in a bad sort of way. Hopefully going to get it finished tommorow, and printed off / binded on Wednesday so I dont have to endure this slow death anymore, plus I’ve got so much to look forward to after this report, such as writing more reports, doing a poster presentation, doing a database presentation, doing a web technologies report, doing a database report and last but not least, doing 3 exams :) .

Oh but after that its alllll good. I’ve promised myself to do quite alot of things once its all over and done with, this includes (might as well write this down so I have something to look forward to):

  • Playing my Nintendo Wii, I’ve been neglecting it quite alot and it deserves some attention
  • Making some music, I’ve bought quite alot of music gear but really havent had the time to use it
  • Learn the violin again, I’m getting right into it once again so that will be fun
  • Building more sites (shockingly site building doesnt end there, I’m hoping to build more sites in my spare time, including my first ever site I’ve made, I’m hoping to get it nice and web2.0erised)
  • Watching loads of films I bought
  • Photography; you dont buy a £500 dslr camera and just leave it there to collect dust. I have a macro filter and its spring, time to take photos of bugs and small stuff haha
  • Gigs, hopefully all for free.. still trying to pull off this whole free gigs for 2007 thing, I’m seeing Muse soon so that should be fun
  • BBQs, loads of them, gotta love a good BBQ.
  • Watch Phantom of the Opera (again); I’m really hoping to see this, lets hope my professor can get me some cheap tickets :D That or I’ll just buy it full price. Best seats all the way
  • Redesign my room; its a mess
  • And last but not least… lounge about all day just for the sake of knowing that you can! I havent had that feeling ever since I finished my second year at Uni, all I did was relax before I started work at IBM, there was nothing to do work wise and it was just bliss.

So yeah, I’ll keep this post near the top just to put my spirits up in getting this whole thing finished. Nice thing to look forward to and all.. mmm… lounging about haha.

Client evaluation

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Some questions for my client to answer that will aid in my evaluation

  1. Looking back at the project, what was your initial reaction of the ideas presented at you and how has it changed now?
  2. Did the final product turn out the way you expected?
  3. Do you think the product satisfied your goal in attracting more potential users and increasing exposure to the site?
  4. Did you find the system easy to use and navigate?
  5. What feature did you like most from the new system? Why do you like it?
  6. What was bad about the system?
  7. If we could redo the project over again, what would you change?
  8. Are there any parts of the system you think we can improve on?
  9. Were you satisfied with the final product?
  10. Did you think communication with the designer (ie me) was successful? Why?
  11. How would you rate the project as a whole (including research, design, implementation etc) on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest.

Right, thats all sorted now

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

Last night was quite exciting, quite alot of good responses on the new site design. In particular the new features such as tags and voting. Will check on Google Analytics near the end and use it as part of my report. But for now, it’s all about finishing up this massive report. I literally have over 10 pages of just PURE text to type up haha. It’s not going to be fun at all. But I have until Thursday to do it, though I plan on getting it all printed off on Wednesday and binded to avoid the inevitable rush on Thursday where people’s instincts turn a little bit animal in terms of getting stuff done.

Ah well, back to work I guess

Project Meeting

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Agenda

  • Report feedback, general feedback on whats good, whats not etc
  • Report markings recommendation; how should I weigh the project
  • Quick Product Demonstration (feedback on it etc)
  • Arrange a time for a proper full on demonstration (hopefully with second marker)

Action/Targets:

  • Do the report!!
  • Include summaries for each section
  • Focus on writing report rather then site making (maybe sort the migration and opening of site)
  • Include use of blog for logging actions and targets etc

Next Meeting:

  • Another impromptu meeting with supervisor after report :p

Website nearly completed, Migration Imminent

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Seems like my prototype site is almost ready for launch. Quite alot of new features have been implemented including:

  • Better integration with social networking sites (includes Digg it/Delicious/Reddit buttons, and more profile pages)
  • Pagination for news and podcast articles
  • Fixing and including some new sideboxes (including Top Songs/Top Tags/Current Show)
  • Voting on podcasts
  • Allow images on news items, integrated onto articles more nicely
  • Loads of fixes on site, including the comments section

The report is doing strangely well. I’m at about 57 pages and 14,000 odd words. Still got evaluation and conclusion to do. Hopefully that will mainly be content only as well as reflections to the site.

Need to review with Supervisors as well as book a time to demonstrate site. I will hopefully get the site migrating and working live before demonstration.

Anaylsis and Design finished on report

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Pretty much completed both sections now.

The Analysis section includes the following:

  • Data Flow Diagram
  • Customer Journeys
  • Web Report Anaylsis
  • Online Surveys
  • Requirements Catalogue

Whilst the Design includes the following:

  • Hardware software used
  • Logical Data Structure
  • Storyboarding
  • Wireframes

I might be keep my design section a bit low but I might need to check on whether thats appropriate. Implementation is where its at as I have developed quite alot of features for the website and have alot to write about for it.

New design changes

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Perhaps one of the most significant change in musecast is the new navigation menu. It both increases the space for content and decreases the unnecessary space used to accommodate the sidebar. This was one of the biggest steps in terms of site designing and will hopefully be a good step since we can use the extra space to implement more content based stuff.
